Which waste does your basin need?

Start with the overflow. Then choose how the waste opens, check the dimensions and coordinate the finish.

Go to the ordering checklist

Check the basin first

With an overflow
Usually a slotted waste, allowing the overflow water to drain.
Without an overflow
Usually an unslotted waste. Confirm the basin’s specified arrangement.
Not sure?
Find the basin code and drawing before choosing. Appearance alone is not enough.

Follow the exact basin manufacturer’s requirements, including any special waste system.

Slotted describes the overflow connection.

A slotted waste provides a route for water from a basin’s overflow into the drain. An unslotted waste is intended for a basin without that overflow arrangement. Check the basin specification as well as the visible opening; unusual designs may have different requirements.

Basin with an overflow

An overflow route connects to a slotted wasteThe dashed line shows the overflow route joining the side opening of the waste below the basin. The arrow through the centre shows the main drain. Conceptual section, not a product drawing.OverflowSlot

Usually a slotted waste: the side opening provides a route for overflow water into the drain.

Basin without an overflow

An unslotted waste has no side opening for an overflowThe basin drains through the centre of the waste. No separate overflow route joins the solid sides of this waste. Conceptual section, not a product drawing. No sideopening

Usually an unslotted waste: there is no side opening to connect a basin overflow.

Concept only, not to scale. The dashed route is schematic. Confirm the exact basin’s waste requirements; special overflow and waste systems may differ.

Write the basin code at the top of your shortlist. Ask your installer to confirm the required waste configuration against that exact model before adding a waste to your order.

Click-clack describes the action.

A click-clack waste opens and closes by pressing its top. It can be slotted or unslotted: the mechanism does not tell you which overflow arrangement it suits.

When comparing options, keep two separate questions on your list: “Does this fit my basin?” and “Is this how I want to operate it?” Resolve fit first, then choose the action and appearance.

Check what comes with the tap.

Do not assume a basin mixer includes a waste. Read the exact product’s inclusions and code, rather than relying on the range name or a photograph showing a complete basin arrangement.

If a listing says “without waste”, plan the waste as a separate purchase. If one is included, still confirm it suits your basin. A matching finish is only one part of the decision.

Keep the waste and the trap as separate lines on your installer’s checklist. Ask which components are supplied, which are required separately and which existing parts can remain.

Similar names. Different overflow arrangements.

These two Jaquar Allied wastes are both listed at 130 mm high. The difference to notice first is the slot configuration, not that shared height.

Slotted: ALD-CHR-709L130

The manufacturer describes this code as a slotted basin waste with a height of 130 mm.

Unslotted: ALD-CHR-705L130

The manufacturer describes this code as an unslotted basin waste, also 130 mm high.

Use the basin’s exact instructions to decide which configuration it requires, then check the waste drawing and connections. Neither example is a verified pairing with an unnamed basin. A shared height or matching finish does not establish fit.

Manufacturer sheets checked 11 October 2026 for the two stated codes. Open the exact selected product and drawing before ordering.

A short checklist before you order.

  • Basin: exact code, drawing and overflow arrangement.
  • Waste: exact code, slotted or unslotted configuration and opening mechanism.
  • Fit: ask the installer to check the waste opening, mounting thickness, connections and space below the basin.
  • Inclusions: list the waste, trap and other fittings separately, marking what is already supplied.
  • Finish: compare the named finish with the tap; use a physical sample where possible.
  • Approval: record unresolved questions before placing the order.

For a replacement, photograph the existing arrangement above and below the basin. Send the product codes and photographs together so the team can see what needs checking.

Browse basin waste options, then keep the exact codes in your saved product shortlist. Search results are options to check, not a confirmation that a waste fits your basin.

Bring the basin code.

Tell the team which basin and mixer you are considering, and what your installer has already confirmed.
